COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio voters rejected a proposal in Tuesday's special election, that would have increased the requirements for constitutional amendments in the state to make the ballot, and be approved.
Issue 1 would have gone into effect immediately if approved. Many Ohio Republicans supported the measure that would have raised the threshold for approving constitutional amendments in Ohio from a simple majority, to 60%.
It would have also required valid signatures for proposed constitutional amendments from all 88 Ohio counties, instead of the current 44. The proposal would also have removed the 10-day "cure period" for supporters of a constitutional amendment to gather more valid signatures, if they failed to obtain enough originally.
With the vote on Tuesday, a constitutional amendment on the ballot in Ohio this November, to ensure abortion rights in the state, will only need a simple majority to pass.
