Perry Football Coach, Asst Basketball Coach Killed in Snowy Car Accident

Perry Township, OH (WIMA) -- The Perry Athletic and School community is in shock this morning, following a 2-car crash that claimed the life of their head football coach and assistant boys basketball coach, Herb Lane.

Snowy conditions on Monday afternoon around 5:30pm led to Lane's vehicle losing control,striking a bridge on the I-75 overpass on McClain Road, and then striking anon-coming vehicle..Both Lane and the other car's driver, 24 year-old Benjamin Heffner, had to be extricated from their vehicles.

Lane was taken to Saint Rita's, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Heffner was taken to Lima Memorial in stable condition.

Perry Schools will be closed today due to the weather and the fatal accident.

Grief counselors will be brought in for students.

Herb Lane was 44 years old.
