40 Confederate Symbols Gone Since George Floyd Death

Richmond, VA Removes Statue Of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart

At least 40 Confederate symbols around the U.S. have been removed since the death of George Floyd in May, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Fourteen others have been renamed, including schools.

The controversy surrounding Confederate monuments reignited after Floyd's death. 46-year-old Floyd died when police officers kneeled on his neck as he pleaded "I can't breathe," becoming the mantra for people fighting against police brutality and racial injustice.

The SPLC says a total of 125 Confederate symbols have been removed across the country since 2015. Nearly 2,000 still remain.

Some cities say the monuments and flags should stay because they honor heritage.
