(Key West, FL) -- The origin of the Key lime pie is in dispute and that has some folks in the Florida Keys upset.
Author Stella Parks claims in her book, BraveTart: Iconic American Desserts, that the Borden company invented the recipe in New York City in 1931 to sell more sweetened condensed milk, a prime ingredient in Key lime pie.
But experts in the Florida Keys say the pie was a staple throughout the island chain well before that.
David Sloan, author of The Key West Key Lime pie Cookbook, says his research proves that the pie was perfected in the late 1800s by a woman named Aunt Sally, the cook for a Key West millionaire.
