Last week, he was laid to rest.
He was tough. He loved football. He loved Ohio State.
He had the dubious task of taking over for a legendary coach.
He was dubbed "old 9-3 Earle". But, ultimately, he was loved and admired, and had a hand in bringing the current Buckeye head coach back to his roots in the great state of Ohio.
I had a few up close and personal experiences with Earle Bruce.
The summer before my 8th grade year, with hopes of playing QB for my school, and eventually for the Buckeyes. Neither one of those happened. (Yeah, that's a young me in the photo with Coach Bruce at his OSU Summer Football Camp)
He came to Lima a few years ago for an Alzheimer's fundraiser; its the disease that took his sister, and ultimately, took him.
I got to do a one-on-one sit down interview with him. When I brought my recorder back, I apparently didn't hit the correct button, because there was no audio.
Oh well. I've got these photos, and many memories.
Thanks, Coach Bruce.
Coach 'em up, up there!
