Saying "see you later" to the Queen of Soul

The songs are classics.

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T", "Chain of Fools", "Think", "Until You Come Back to Me".

I really became aware of Aretha Franklin when she was collaborating with other artists in the 1980's, and she had a few solo hits of her own.

I remember "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" she did with George Michael, as well as "Who's Zoomin' Who" and "Freeway of Love".

She was so revered as the "Queen of Soul", that other artists desired to attempt to copy her style, or even mention her in their own lyrics, like one of my all-time favorites, Steely Dan did, in their song "Hey Nineteen":

"Hey Nineteen,

That's 'Retha Franklin

She don't remember the Queen of Soul

It's hard times befallen

The sole survivors

She thinks I'm crazy

But I'm just growing old"

Aretha was the first women inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and she was one of those you could mention by the first name only, and you knew exactly who it was.

Heaven's band just got a new lead singer.

RIP, Aretha! Your legacy lives on in your great music and voice.
