(Undated) -- The one-time U.S. airman whose radio show inspired Robin Williams' character in "Good Morning, Vietnam" has died.

In a statement, Cronauer's family said the former U.S. Air Force sergeant, "loved the service men and service women all over the world, and always made time to personally engage with them."
Cronauer co-authored the story for the 1987 dramedy "Good Morning, Vietnam."
After his stint with the Air Force and as a radio deejay for the Armed Forces Radio Network in Vietnam, Cronauer's first real professional job was in Lima, at WIMA-TV in 1967, as a news anchor and reporter.
