(Lubbock, TX) -- The namesake of Buddy Holly's hit "Peggy Sue" has died. Peggy Sue Gerron passed away earlier this week in West Texas.
Holly and Gerron knew each other from Lubbock High School before Holly wrote the song in 1957.
He originally titled the song "Cindy Lou" after his niece but drummer Jerry Allison wanted it named after Gerron.
Allison and Gerron had dated in high school and Allison was hoping to get back together.
The two ended up marrying but later divorced.
Gerron married her second husband in California and stayed there until returning to Texas in 1995.
Gerron was 78.
