>>Jordan To Defend Trump

(Lima, OH)--Fourth District Congressman Jim Jordan has been added to President Donald Trump’s defense team, in a roundabout way. A spokesman for Jordan told WIMA that Jordan would be kept in Washington through the weekend and possibly beyond, postponing a planned trip back to his home district this week.

In a White House briefing sent out Monday night, Trump named Jordan as one of the eight House members “working to combat this hyper-partisan and baseless impeachment.”

Jordan’s role will be outside of the Senate chambers, as he serves as a staunch defender of the President in the court of public opinion.

>>TAX INCREASES MAY BE HARDER TO PASS IN OHIO

(COLUMBUS, OH)--A GROUP OF STATE LAWMAKERS, INCLUDING THE LEADERS OF THE OHIO SENATE, WANTS TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO MAKE IT HARDER FOR FUTURE LAWMAKERS TO RAISE TAXES.

CLEVELAND.COM REPORTS THAT THE PROPOSAL WOULD REQUIRE A THREE-FIFTHS SUPERMAJORITY FROM BOTH CHAMBERS OF THE LEGISLATURE - INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT SIMPLE MAJORITY - TO APPROVE ANY INCREASES IN THE STATE’S INCOME TAX RATE. THE BILL HAS 11 REPUBLICAN CO-SPONSORS, INCLUDING SENATE PRESIDENT LARRY OBHOF. REPUBLICAN STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE CUT THE STATE’S INCOME TAX RATE REPEATEDLY IN RECENT YEARS, INCLUDING BY FOUR PERCENT AS PART OF LAST YEAR’S STATE BUDGET BILL.

>>OHIO SUPREME COURT REJECTS BAIL RISK TOOLS

(COLUMBUS, OH)--THE OHIO SUPREME COURT HAS REJECTED A RECOMMENDATION THAT TOOLS USED TO MEASURE OFFENDERS' LIKELIHOOD OF SKIPPING OUT ON COURT APPEARANCES AFTER AN ARREST BE MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL JUDGES AS THEY MAKE BOND DECISIONS.

REQUIRING THE AVAILABILITY OF SO-CALLED 'RISK ASSESSMENT TOOLS' WAS THE TOP RECOMMENDATION OF A TASK FORCE COMMISSIONED BY THE COURT LAST YEAR TO EXAMINE OHIO'S BAIL SYSTEM. SUPPORTERS SAY THE TOOLS ARE A MORE ACCURATE WAY TO WEIGH FACTORS JUDGES CONSIDER WHEN SETTING BOND. DETRACTORS SAY THE TOOLS CAN BE RACIALLY BIASED, COSTLY TO SMALLER COURTS, AND IMPROPERLY OVERRIDE JUDGES' OWN EXPERIENCES IN SETTING BOND.
