>>OHIO NEW LAWS

THE NEW YEAR WILL BRING LAW CHANGES OF EVERY SORT TO OHIO.

MIKE DEWINE SIGNED NEARLY TWO-DOZEN LAWS INTO ACTION FOR THIS YEAR. THAT MEANS CHANGES FOR YOU. FIRST, OHIOANS WILL SPEND LESS FOR FEMININE HYGEINE PRODUCTS AS THE STATE REPEALED THE SO-CALLED "PINK TAX”; SOME TEACHERS COULD GET A LITTLE HELP WITH A SHIFT ALLOWING THEM TO CLAIM STATE INCOME TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR CERTAIN CLASSROOM ITEMS THAT THEY BUY WITH THEIR OWN MONEY; ALSO THIS MONTH, MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS WILL SEE A LITTLE MORE ON THEIR CHECKS - AN INCREASE FROM $8.55 TO $8.70 PER HOUR. TIPPED WORKERS WILL SEE A FIVE-CENT BUMP; IN JULY, THE OLD RULE DEMANDING A FRONT LICENSE PLATE WILL BE REPEALED.

>>VAPING CHANGE

PRESIDENT TRUMP YESTERDAY SAID THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL AVOID BANNING CERTAIN FLAVORED E-CIGARETTES AND WILL SOON ANNOUNCE A NEW STRATEGY TO TACKLE UNDERAGE VAPING.

RESEARCHERS SAY A VAPING TAX COULD DETER ADULTS FROM QUITTING CIGARETTES. TAXING ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES LIKE REGULAR SMOKES COULD RESULT IN FEWER AMERICANS KICKING THE HABIT. RESEARCH ESTIMATES THAT TAXING VAPING PRODUCTS AT THE SAME RATE AS CIGARETTES COULD DETER NEARLY THREE MILLION AMERICANS FROM QUITTING OVER A DECADE. THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH UPDATED THE NUMBER OF LUNG ILLNESS LINKED TO VAPING THIS WEEK. THERE ARE NOW 92 OHIOANS WHO ARE SICK, BUT SO FAR, NO DEATHS.

>>STILL MISSING

ANOTHER DAY AND NO NEW LEADS IN THE SEARCH FOR A MISSING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY FROM PORT CLINTON. HARLEY DILLY DISAPPEARED FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20TH. HE WAS LAST SEEN LEAVING FOR SCHOOL ALMOST TWO WEEKS AGO. EVERY DAY PORT CLINTON POLICE POST UPDATES ON FACEBOOK. POLICE MET WITH HIS FAMILY AND SAY THERE IS NO REASON TO BELIEVE THEY ARE INVOLVED IN HARLEY'S DISAPPEARANCE. I'M SCOTT LIGHT.

>>NYE GUNFIRE

NEW YEAR'S EVE WAS A BUSY NIGHT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT IN SOME OF OHIO'S BIGGER CITIES.

OFFICER HAD THEIR HANDS FULL IN CLEVELAND - WHERE THERE WERE 10 SHOOTINGS OVERNIGHT. CINCINNATI POLICE WERE CALLED TO TWO SHOOTINGS. AND IN AKRON, ONE PERSON WAS KILLED BY GUN VIOLENCE. IN COLUMBUS, HUNDREDS OF SHOTS WERE FIRED BUT NO ONE WAS HURT. EARLIER THIS YEAR THE CITY INSTALLED 'SHOTSPOTTER TECHNOLOGY' IN THREE NEIGHBORHOODS. THE SENSORS PICKED UP 342 SHOTS FIRED. SHOT-SPOTTER MAY HAVE DETECTED MORE CELEBRATORY GUN FIRE AND POLICE SAY THAT'S A SIGN IT IS WORKING AND DOING ITS JOB.
