Students Across U.S. Stage Walkout To Protest Gun Violence

Students across the country have staged a walkout to protest gun violence one month after the deadly shooting at a Florida school that left 17 people dead.

The walkouts are scheduled for 10 a.m. local time and planned to last for 17 minutes, one minute for each of the victims from last month's massacre.

The protests have been greeted by mixed reactions from administrators. Some have said they support their students for taking a stand, while others have threatened disciplinary measures against any who participates in the walkout today. Students say the issue is too important to worry about the consequences.

Nearly 3,000 walkouts are planned today in what is being billed as the largest piece of student activism that has emerged after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Students say they're demanding action from lawmakers, including a ban on assault weapons and mandatory background checks for all gun sales.
