Government Shutdown Threat Grows On Right, Left

The threat of a federal government shutdown Friday night is growing on both sides of the aisle.  House Republican leaders are proposing a bill to fund the government for four weeks, to give lawmakers time to work out a longterm spending bill.  But some GOP conservatives in the House are opposed to the plan because it doesn't include more money for defense.  Meanwhile, Democrats say they won't support this, or any other funding bill that doesn't include protection for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

If Congress can't pass a spending bill, hundreds of thousands of federal workers will be sent home.  So-called non-essential government services and activities will also stop.
